Truth Matters: The Sufficiency of Scripture

by Mike Riccardi

R. C. Sproul once said, “I think the greatest weakness in the church today is that almost no one believes that God invests His power in the Bible. Everyone is looking for power in a program, in a technique, in anything and everything except where God has placed it: His Word.” He was right. Truth is the fundamental principle of any consistent attempt to navigate the world. What is true? By what authority? How can we tell? These are absolutely foundational questions.

God’s answer to these questions is that truth is whatever conforms to His own mind. And He has revealed His mind to His creatures in the 66 books of the Old and New Testaments. Scripture is the sole infallible authority for all matters which it addresses.

By God’s grace, quite a few within evangelicalism agree with that confession of sola Scriptura. Many affirm Scripture’s inerrancy and authority. Not as many, though, affirm Scripture’s sufficiency. This is the watershed issue of our day. We agree that the Bible is necessary. But is the Bible enough? Do we rightly sing, in that great hymn, How Firm a Foundation, “What more can He say than to you He hath said?” Has God granted us everything we need for life and godliness through the knowledge of God by His precious promises (2 Pet 1:3-4)? Or do we need supplemental something more?

To answer these questions, Grace To You is hosting another Truth Matters Conference. This one is set for October 16 to 18 at Grace Community Church in Los Angeles. And the topic is the sufficiency of Scripture. It’s the perfect topic to celebrate the 50 years of faithful ministry of the President of Grace To You, Pastor John MacArthur. Registration is closed, but a live-stream link will be available.

In anticipation of the conference, Grace To You has been posting teaser videos, asking the keynote speakers popular questions about the doctrine of Scripture’s sufficiency. More are still to come, but you can see the videos that have been posted below.

1. Why do we need a conference on the sufficiency of Scripture?

2. Why is it crucial to defend the sufficiency of Scripture?

3. If it doesn’t speak to every specific issue, is Scripture truly sufficient?

4. What are the chief threats to the sufficiency of Scripture today?

5. Why read anything else if Scripture is sufficient?

6. Is it consistent for continuationists to affirm the sufficiency of Scripture?

7. Is belief in the sufficiency of Scripture important for our sanctification?

8. How does the sufficiency of Scripture inform and energize evangelism?

9. Is Scripture sufficient to meet modern cultural challenges?
